“When asked about the material, the surprising answer is: cardboard.” Mr. Ina of Craft Studio Creal is the craftsman who developed Japan’s first cardboard cat scratcher. Since his first handmade project as a child, he has created many works, and in this case, saw potential in the layering of cardboard, leading to the development of a cat scratcher.

What was the biggest focus?

“Designing something cats truly love.” The curves had to be tested and refined many times to reach the ideal form. Each piece is cut and glued by hand, a labor-intensive process that also ensures durability. The result is a one-of-a-kind scratcher where cats can both relax and play.

Special blades are used to create wave-like cardboard edges, adding strength. When used, the distinct “crack-crack” sound of clawing is something owners often remark on with delight.

And the materials?

Unlike many mass-market scratchers made from imported lightweight cardboard, the TOG Wave uses reinforced, five-layer Japanese cardboard (W-Float) normally reserved for heavy goods and international shipping. Stronger and more durable, it also produces less debris.

Made to JIS standards, the material quality is exceptionally high. Both materials and production remain entirely Japan-made.
