The food and water bowls that harmonize with daily living are crafted by Mr. Matsubara, the fourth-generation head of Marucho Pottery, a kiln with over 110 years of history. Based in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture—long celebrated as a town of ceramics—he continues the tradition of making with care and devotion every day.

How long does it take to create one piece?

It usually takes about one to two weeks to complete a single bowl. The process itself is long: kneading the clay, drying, bisque firing, engraving the logo, applying the glaze, and firing once more. Unlike ordinary tableware, &CAT’s food bowls pursue a design that blends seamlessly into interiors, resulting in a sharper form. This sharpness, however, makes it a challenge for artisans—it requires delicate attention to prevent chipping. In the end, each piece demands nearly 1.5 times the usual amount of time and effort.

What is the true charm of ceramics?

No two pieces are ever the same. The final glaze, applied by hand, gives each vessel its own unique expression. We hope customers will take pleasure in comparing them and finding the one that feels most like their own. Another important point is that these bowls are porcelain, not earthenware. Because porcelain contains more minerals, it absorbs less water and is far more durable—it can be safely used in dishwashers and microwaves. In fact, unless broken, a piece can truly last a lifetime.
