The “TAJIMI / water bowl” combines the ideal height for your cat’s comfort with a refined design that enhances your living space. In the mountain town of Takayama, Gifu, a seasoned wood craftsman has been shaping wood for nearly half a century. Since graduating high school, he has dedicated his life to woodworking, refining techniques and listening to the voice of each piece of timber. With over six months of development, his expertise gave birth to furniture designed exclusively for cats—functional, safe, and beautifully made.

What were the biggest challenges?

The greatest challenge was achieving a design that allowed cats to play and climb safely. With the Tower Cat, for example, we created numerous prototypes—testing stability, height, and slip resistance—while observing real cats in action. No compromise was possible. Only through repeated trials did we arrive at a form that truly satisfied both safety and usability.
For the water bowls, the challenge was in the woodwork. Thick walnut planks were carefully shaved down and joined seamlessly—a size and technique we had never attempted before. We also refined the bowl’s round shape so food wouldn’t collect in the corners, ensuring easy eating for cats and easy cleaning for owners.

Tell us about the materials.

We use “Japanese Walnut” from Akita Prefecture, prized for its gentle grain and warm tone that harmonize beautifully with interiors. Its light weight and workability made it the perfect choice. Unlike typical cat towers that rely on fabric and last only 2–3 years, our towers are built entirely from solid wood, designed to last 10 years or more. Over time, the wood develops a richer patina, aging gracefully alongside your cat. This way, the furniture becomes not just a pet product, but a long-lasting part of your home.
