Behind everything &CAT makes are outstanding craftspeople from across Japan. Made one at a time, with care, these products carry a warmth and a presence that mass production can never reach.
The cat houses and beds are built by furniture makers in Tajimi, Gifu — precisely assembled by hand and designed around how a cat moves and settles. Their clean forms and fine wood grain give a room a quiet composure, and give the cat a place it relaxes into without thinking.
The cat trees and wooden stands come from a master in Hida Takayama who has worked with wood for fifty years. They sit in a home as though they had always been there. The smooth surfaces cut by hand and the durable structure hold up to daily use, year after year.
The food and water bowls are Mino ware, a ceramic tradition that reaches back 1,300 years to the Nara period. Traditional technique meets a modern eye, and the result gives a little back every time you use it.
The solid-iron water stand was developed with Sugiyama Seisakusho, based in Seki, Gifu — a city known for its blades. The weight only iron has, worked to millimetre precision, makes a piece that is as practical as it is good to look at.
The scratchers are made in Tokoname, Aichi, where craftspeople glue the corrugated board together sheet by sheet — slow work, done properly. The result has a form of its own and the durability to last, with a surface cats become absorbed in and a look that fits the room.
Every one of these products carries the intent of its maker and the skill of Japanese manufacturing. &CAT items are not simply pet supplies. They are part of your home — part of what makes the days you share with your cat worth looking at.
Sustainable craftsmanship
Beauty and function are not the only things we weigh. How we treat finite resources, and what we pass on — our philosophy of making lives there too.
The cat trees and wooden bowl stands use domestic timber, cut on plan from the mountains of Tohoku. Planned felling is managed to keep a forest cycling in good health — a choice made for the environment rather than for cost. Short transport distances keep wood mileage and carbon emissions down. Choosing materials rooted in a place, and in nature, is how a sustainable future gets built.
The finish is the same one given to wooden furniture: carefully sanded, then finished with natural oil. The surface is soft to the hand and deepens with time. The longer you use it, the better it gets — and that change is part of what the piece brings to your home.
