A few marks. Still entirely good
for everyday use.

Every &CAT bowl is Mino ware, handmade in Japan. Because each one is finished by hand, no two are identical - the depth of the glaze and the way the piece comes out of the kiln vary slightly from bowl to bowl. That is part of the character of the ware, and we set an inspection standard so that pieces within that range ship as regular stock. Outlet pieces are the ones that fall just outside it: pinholes that stand out a little more, heavier variation where the dish meets the stem, a small mark or a slight wobble. A little too pronounced to call character, and normally not something we would sell. But the difference is cosmetic only - strength, hygiene and the way the bowl works in daily use are exactly the same as a regular piece. Rather than let them go to waste, we are offering these few pieces as outlet stock at a special price. A good chance to bring one home for less.

What "outlet" means here, in practice.

The reason differs from piece to piece. Some bowls have just one of the following; some have several. Here are the four most common examples.

1. Pinholes (tiny dots)

Pinprick-sized holes or dots in the surface of the glaze. They form naturally during firing and appear on regular pieces too, but on outlet pieces there may be more of them, or they may sit somewhere more visible. They have no effect on strength or hygiene.

2. Black specks

Minerals in the clay and glaze can surface as small black specks during firing. It is a natural characteristic of Mino ware and appears on regular pieces too, but on outlet pieces there may be more of them, or they may sit somewhere more visible. They are not dirt, and they are safe for your cat to eat around.

3. Uneven glaze, or firing color where the dish meets the stem

On some pieces the glaze runs heavier or lighter than usual, or the firing color varies, most often around the join between the dish and the stem. It comes with firing by hand in a kiln, and makes no difference at all in use.

4. A difference in shade

Even within the same light gray, the shade shifts with how the glaze settles and how hot the kiln runs. In the photo, a regular piece is on the left and an outlet piece on the right. Side by side you can see it; on its own, it simply reads as light gray.

About KANON

A raised, pedestal-style food bowl, with the shadows of a carved shinogi pattern following the line of the stem. At 10.5 cm high and 15 cm across, the dish is wide and shallow - easy for short-legged and flat-faced cats to reach, so they can eat in a natural posture. For the full details, see the regular product page.

Care & Cautions

• You may see variation in the glaze, small black specks, or pinholes - tiny pinprick-sized dots in the glaze surface. These come from minerals in the clay and the glaze reacting to the heat of the kiln. They are not dirt, and they are not faults.
• Every piece is made by hand, so shape, dimensions and color vary slightly even within the same product.
• Ceramic can crack or chip if it takes a hard knock.
• Stop using a piece that is chipped or cracked - it can cause injury.
• Do not scrub with metal scourers, powdered cleansers or hard sponges. They will scratch the surface.
• If you set the bowl directly on the floor, we recommend putting a mat underneath to protect your flooring.
• Product photos are edited to come as close to the real colors as we can, but the shade you see may differ depending on your monitor settings and the lighting in your room.
• Specifications and appearance may change without notice as we make improvements.
