What inspired you to start making cat scratching posts?
Originally, we made cardboard boxes to store Maneki-neko (beckoning cats), a Tokoname specialty. One day, our craft Maneki-neko (beckoning cats) made from cardboard were well-received, which led us to create three-dimensional works such as craft warlords and Hina dolls. The idea of "cross-section of laminated layers" that emerged during this production process inspired us to start developing scratching posts. At the time, flat-shaped ones were the norm, but we took advantage of the thickness and laminated structure of cardboard to develop relaxing, three-dimensional scratching posts and playful shapes.
What are the features of Creal's scratching post?
The most distinctive feature of this scratching post is the material we use. While most scratching posts are made by gluing together several sheets of lightweight cardboard imported from overseas, we use "W-flute," a thick and strong cardboard used for 10kg mandarin orange boxes. Each sheet of this material is cut out individually and carefully glued together by hand, resulting in a strong, durable finish with no crushed seams. We also use a special blade to create a wavy cross section of the cardboard, further increasing its strength and allowing for unique shapes. The "crunching" sound of a cat sharpening its claws resonates clearly, making this a distinctive feature.
What was particularly difficult about creating the &CAT scratching post?
As expected, it's the delicate curves that &CAT's designers were so particular about. We paid particular attention to recreating the thin parts so that they wouldn't get crushed by the pressure when cutting out the mold. We feel that the combination of &CAT's stylish and delicate design and our strength and durability technology has resulted in a product with a satisfactory shape. We feel that the structure has been carefully calculated down to the smallest detail so that cats can use it comfortably.
Why do we insist on products made in Japan?
This is to ensure the quality we can deliver with confidence. By using all materials and processes domestically, we hope to build trust in safety and security. We hope you will pick up our products and feel the difference from products made overseas.
Why did you decide to set up a shop?
At first, it was just a factory, but as the variety of products increased, we wanted to create a place where people could see and touch them directly. By making it a store that combines exhibitions, sales, and craftsmanship experiences, we are now able to hold workshops and the like. Now we also plan events that parents and children can enjoy together.
Please tell us about your future prospects.
I have many dreams. In the future, I would like to create a comprehensive facility that will hold pet adoption events and a pet-friendly cafe. In the near future, I would like to increase the number of places where people can actually see and touch our products. I would like to continue to explore new types of scratching posts that have not yet been seen in the world. I would be happy to take on new challenges with &CAT.
