An endless pursuit led to Japan’s first cardboard cat scratcher.

“The material is actually cardboard.” That surprising answer comes from Mr. Ina of Craft Studio Creal, the craftsman who developed Japan’s first cardboard scratcher. Since his first creation in elementary school, he has produced countless works. Feeling the potential of layered cardboard, he eventually arrived at developing a scratcher for cats.

What’s your greatest focus?

Above all, pursuing a design that cats love. The subtle curves took countless trials to perfect. Each piece of die-cut cardboard is hand-glued one by one, requiring effort and ingenuity to ensure it won’t collapse. But thanks to that, it became a unique scratcher where cats can relax and play.
I also used a special blade to make the corrugated edges wavy, increasing strength. When cats scratch, you’ll be surprised by the satisfying “crunching” sound.

What about the material?

Most scratchers sold in mass retailers use imported cardboard made for lightweight packaging. For this, we chose Japanese 5-layer reinforced cardboard called “W-Float,” normally used for heavy loads or overseas shipping. It not only increases strength and durability but also reduces dust.
Japanese materials meet strict JIS standards, ensuring excellent quality. Beyond the material itself, we also emphasize domestic production and craftsmanship at every stage.
