    The color of the sky,
    a little before dawn.

A new color for CHALICE: Asagi.
Pale blue with grey in it. Where the glaze runs thin, along the rim and the edges, it naturally takes on an amber tone, and on some faces a hint of yellow drifts through. It has the stillness of the sky just before daybreak, when the color hasn't settled yet.
The form is the same as the other nine colors. The 13 cm height developed with a veterinarian, and the shallow, wide dish that keeps whiskers clear. Everything that makes it kind to a cat stays; only the color is new.
It joins the existing nine as the tenth.

    CHALICE in the Asagi glaze

Like the sky just before dawn.

Where the glaze sits thin - the rim, the corners - it comes out of the kiln with an amber cast. Nothing was drawn there on purpose; it's simply what this glaze does. A spot of warmth bleeding through the pale blue. Look down into the bowl and it's the first place your eye lands.
The color shifts depending on which face you're looking at. The inner slope turns yellow; the outside reads bluer. By a window it looks cool, and in late-afternoon light, a little warmer. A quiet bowl that never quite commits to one color.

Amber tones at the rim of the Asagi glaze

    Asagi, a Japanese color name.

Asagi is one of the old Japanese names for a shade of indigo - the pale blue that appears when indigo is dyed lightly. The name comes from the color of a spring onion leaf, lightened.
CHALICE's Asagi takes that pale blue and drops the saturation further, working in grey and white. It sits closer to the sky before it fully breaks than to dyed cloth.

CHALICE bowls in a living room

13 cm, worked out with a veterinarian.

A low bowl pulls the neck down, and that load lands on the body at every meal. The 13 cm pedestal, designed with veterinary input, lets your cat eat with its posture intact. It's a kind height for senior cats too.

A cat eating at a natural posture

Shallow and wide, so whiskers stay clear.

The shallow, gently flaring shape keeps whiskers off the rim while your cat eats. It's also shaped to help reduce regurgitation and food pushed over the edge - a form worked out around how cats actually eat.

    The shallow, wide bowl interior

    780 g of quiet stability.

Enough weight that it doesn't slide or tip while your cat eats. Solid enough that a robot vacuum bumping into it changes nothing.

    The weighted pedestal base

    Porcelain, so it stays clean.

Porcelain barely absorbs moisture, which keeps odors and bacteria from taking hold. Microwave and dishwasher safe, so it's easy on you as well.

    Clean porcelain surface

Made at a Mino ware kiln, one at a time.

Each piece is finished by hand by experienced potters at a Mino ware kiln carrying on 1,300 years of the craft. No two pieces share the same glaze movement or depth of firing color - each one arrives with its own character.

Set the whole feeding spot, not just the bowl.

For the surface underneath, there is the FIKA food mat.
Solid oak framing a ceramic tile, sized to take a food bowl and a water bowl side by side. Spills wipe away - there is nothing to wash. At around 2.2 kg it stays put even when your cat steps on it, and the wooden frame has a recess on each side so you can lift it easily.
Make your cat's meal corner part of the room.

    Care & Cautions

    • You may see variation in the glaze, small black specks, or pinholes - tiny pinprick-sized dots in the glaze surface. These come from minerals in the clay and the glaze reacting to the heat of the kiln. They are not dirt, and they are not faults.
    • Every piece is made by hand, so shape, dimensions and color vary slightly even within the same product.
    • Ceramic can crack or chip if it takes a hard knock.
    • Stop using a piece that is chipped or cracked - it can cause injury.
    • Do not scrub with metal scourers, powdered cleansers or hard sponges. They will scratch the surface.
    • If you set the bowl directly on the floor, we recommend putting a mat underneath to protect your flooring.
    • Product photos are edited to come as close to the real colors as we can, but the shade you see may differ depending on your monitor settings and the lighting in your room.
    • Specifications and appearance may change without notice as we make improvements.
