    Cat food mats are usually plastic or fabric. Put wipe-clean first and that's where you end up.
    FIKA is built from solid oak and a ceramic tile instead. The tile at the center absorbs neither water nor oil, so a spill comes off with a quick pass of a cloth. Nothing ever needs to go in the washing machine.
    A food bowl and a water bowl - the two that are there every day - needed room to sit side by side without crowding, and that width came out at 46 cm.
    With the pet-product look stripped out, what's left reads as furniture. Left out in a living room or dining room, it doesn't disturb the air of the place.
    You end up watching them eat. It's the spot you look at most in a day.

    The frame is solid white oak. The straight, light grain sits easily on any floor.
    At its center, a smooth ceramic tile. The surface carries a faint variation in tone, with the quiet character of stone.
    It never flattens into a single blank color - there's depth in the material.

    Spill it, wipe it, done

    Ceramic tile absorbs neither water nor oil. Scattered kibble, spilled water - one pass with a cloth and it's back to where it started.
    There's no laundering it like a fabric mat, and no need for a spare to use while the first one dries.

    A food bowl and a water bowl. We looked for the width where the two that are there every day sit side by side without crowding, and settled on 46 cm.

    Your cat steps on it. It doesn't move.

    Around 2.2 kg (4.9 lb). Enough weight that it stays where it is when a cat puts their weight on it.
    None of the sliding you get with a light fabric mat, shifting a little further out of place at every meal. The daily business of putting it back stops happening.

    And for when you pick it up

    There's a small recess on each side of the wooden frame.
    Your fingers find a hold even with the mat flat on the floor, so it lifts straight up when you're cleaning or moving things around.
    Solid where it sits, light when you lift it. Not only the hours your cat uses it, but the moments you have to move it.

    For a smaller cat, a cool place to lie

    Ceramic tile feels cool to the touch.
    A smaller cat may well stretch out and sleep here on a hot day. The place they eat becomes a place they stay.
    Note: there is no powered or water-based cooling function.

    Care & Cautions

    • It arrives fully assembled. Nothing to put together.
    • The frame is solid wood, so the color, the grain and the knots differ from one piece to the next.
    • In direct sunlight or a very dry room, the color may shift and the wood may warp slightly.
    • Water will stain and discolor solid wood. Wipe the frame with a cloth wrung out well, then go over it with a dry cloth.
    • Re-oiling it about once a year with a standard furniture oil keeps the finish looking its best.
    • The tile is porcelain. It can crack or chip if it takes a hard knock.
    • Stop using it if the tile chips or cracks - it can cause injury.
    • Each tile is made by hand, so the color varies slightly from one to the next. Variation in the glaze, small black specks and pinholes can occur - they are not dirt, and they are not faults.
    • Do not scrub with metal scourers, powdered cleansers or hard sponges. They will scratch the surface.
    • Your cat may scratch the wood and leave marks in the surface.
    • Product photos are edited to come as close to the real colors as we can, but the shade you see may differ depending on your monitor settings and the lighting in your room.
